Most of you are familiar with Philip Pullman's Golden Compass series. But do you also know about his Sally Lockhart mystery series? Based in Victorian London, these books revolve around swashbuckling Sally Lockhart who -- unlike most Victorian woman -- is completely independent, with her own successful business and a comfortable home for her young daughter, Harriett. Think of her as the Victorian Nancy Drew! The four books in this series are The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadown in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and the Tin Princess.
The Lion and the Mouse, by Jerry Pinkney. In this wordless adaption of one of Aesop's most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learns that no act of kindness is ever wasted. Pinkney, an award-winning illustrator, sets his book in the landscape of the African Serengetti, and his stunning watercolors will take your breath away.
Lucy Cousins, creator of the popular Maisy books, retells her favorite fairy tales with vivid, rousing illustrations in Yummy: Eight Favorite Fairy Tales. Cousins puts a new face on such favorites as little Red Riding Hood, The Three LIttle Pigs, and The Little Red Hen, with writing that is simple and direct and illustrations that are bold and colorful.
Newbery-Medal-winning author of such favorites as The Tale of Despereaux and Because of Winn-Dixie, Kate DiCamillo returns with a haunting fable about trusting the unexpected and making the impossible come true. In The Magician's Elephant, ten-year-old orphan Peter Augustus Duchene learns from a fortune-teller that his sister, long thought to be dead, is in fact alive, and that an elephant will lead him to her.
John Burningham has produced a wonderfully whimsical and adorable picture book that reveals the answer to that question we've all been asking: Just where do cats go at night? It's a Secret!
One of the hottest series for middle readers these days is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, by Jeff Kinney. The most recent book in that series is Dog Days. These books really are quite fun. A movie based on the series should be hitting the theaters in early April.
This year's winner of the Newbery award is When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead. Paying homage to A Wrinkle in Time, the book involves time travel, mystery, and the complexities of family and friendships.
The winner of this year's Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature is Going Bovine, by Libba Bray. Bray is also the author of historical fiction bestselling Gemma Doyle Trilogy: A Great and TErrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, and The Sweet Far Thing. Going Bovine involves Mad Cow Disease, time travel, a video-gaming dwarf named Gonzo, and a variety of other entertaining characters on a darkly comedic journey.
Two local authors of young adult books have recently been honored. L.K. Madigan won the 2010 William C. Morris Award for her novel Flash Burnout, and Laini Taylor was a finalist for the National Book Award for her book Lips Touch Three Times (with illustrations by her husband, Jim Di Bartolo)

Attention all Rick Riordan fans -- and really, who isn't?
Fans of The Percy Jackson series (starting with The Lightning Thief) will be thrilled to know that Mr. Riordan's new series, The Kane Chronicles, will launch on May 4. The new series features a brother and sister who are descendents of Egyptian magicians and who must battle gods accidentally released in the present. "If The Kane Chronicles can be a gateway into Egypt in the same way [that Percy Jackson was for Greek mythology], I will feel like I've done something good," says Riordan. In the interim, readers hungry for more from this savvy author would do well to check out The 39 Clues series. Mr. Riordan wrote the story arc for this series, also featuring a brother and sister seeking out clues around the world, as well as Book One: Maze of Bones, with other top authors for young readers writing the remaining books. In the Fall, the first book in a Percy Jackson spinoff series will be published, a series centered around Camp Half Blood but focusing on other campers.
